Front Row Shiraz/Mourvedre/Viognier 2018 ‘Great-value red for cold day comfort
Made by Babylon’s Peak in the South African Swartland winemaking region, the vineyards are high at 700 metres. The vines are pruned heavily for low yields and are hand-picked before 36 days of cold maceration before crushing. The juice then ferments for seven days in open tanks and has no oak ageing. So what you see if what you get: a lot of fruit. The wine, a mix of 53% Shiraz, 40% Mourvèdre and 7% Viognier, is medium-bodied, smooth, ripe and very juicy. It’s made in a hot place but drinks beautifully in a cold climate. It’s a wine for a relaxing afternoon and a game of backgammon. Horribly good value. Alc 14%. Screwcap.
